Thank you Carter, it is helpful to understand this stuff.

Subject: [Odyssey-L] RE: Network & security setup for Odyssey Standalone
I can offer some very limited help on this:
Odyssey runs a stand-alone database server on the local workstation. It is possible to run Odyssey over a network, but I have no experience with this and can offer no other information.
Odyssey does not need e-mail, FTP, or any other network service to operate.
Odyssey does need a public IP address with TCP send and receive open on port 7968. No other ports need to be open. This port also needs to be open for send and receive on any software firewall installed on the Odyssey workstation (Windows Firewall, for example).
I don't know enough about firewalls to answer the question about the DMZ. Sorry.
The Odyssey workstation does not need to be entered into any publicly available DNS service. Odyssey sending and receiving outside the firewall is strictly based on the public IP address. If your institution runs an internal DNS, it might need to be listed there, depending on how the firewall is set up to translate the public IP address to the internal IP address. We ran into a problem with that when we had to replace our Odyssey workstation recently and had to be sure the machine names were the same.
Our Odyssey workstation runs a single network adapter. Whether or not to run a second adapter would depend strictly on your IT department's opinions about network security.
I hope this helps a little bit.

Subject: [Odyssey-L] Network & security setup for Odyssey Standalone
Hello, friends,
I'm new to Odyssey Standalone and to the list and I need to ask some implementation questions that I can't find answers for. The questions have to do with network setup and with security.
As I understand it, Odyssey is a database service that can send and receive documents, not a web server or an e-mail server. It needs a publically available IP address that runs on port 7968. No other publically accessible port needs to be open on the network adapter or the firewall specifically for Odyssey's operations. Is this correct?
Because of the need for Odyssey to have a unique public IP address, it will have to be in the DMZ of the site's firewall to be publically accessible. Is this correct?
Because the Odyssey service does not run as a named host, but rather is used only through an IP address, no DNS entries are needed. Is this correct?
Odyssey can run on a desktop computer that can be simply located in the ILL room. That computer will already have a private IP address assigned to it associated with your site's LAN. For simplicity and security, is it desirable to install a second network adapter for Odyssey to run through, to which a public IP address could be assigned and the adapter connected directly to the DMZ? Then that IP address on the DMZ could be configured to have only port 7968 open.
Is this how to do these aspects of the setup?
I would be grateful for any insights on these questions.
Thanks,
Bob Glass
