Subject: [Odyssey-L] Network & security setup for Odyssey Standalone

Hello, friends,

I'm new to Odyssey Standalone and to the list and I need to ask some implementation questions that I can't find answers for. The questions have to do with network setup and with security.

As I understand it, Odyssey is a database service that can send and receive documents, not a web server or an e-mail server. It needs a publically available IP address that runs on port 7968. No other publically accessible port needs to be open on the network adapter or the firewall specifically for Odyssey's operations. Is this correct?

Because of the need for Odyssey to have a unique public IP address, it will have to be in the DMZ of the site's firewall to be publically accessible. Is this correct?

Because the Odyssey service does not run as a named host, but rather is used only through an IP address, no DNS entries are needed. Is this correct?

Odyssey can run on a desktop computer that can be simply located in the ILL room. That computer will already have a private IP address assigned to it associated with your site's LAN. For simplicity and security, is it desirable to install a second network adapter for Odyssey to run through, to which a public IP address could be assigned and the adapter connected directly to the DMZ? Then that IP address on the DMZ could be configured to have only port 7968 open.

Is this how to do these aspects of the setup?

I would be grateful for any insights on these questions.

Thanks,
Bob Glass
